At TômTex, we are working to challenge the status quo of our petroleum defined textile industry by introducing novel materials that engage circularity in a genuine way. We are working at the intersection of design, chemistry, and biology to create a material that is as luxurious as it is regenerative.
TômTex’s cornerstone ingredient is chitosan, the second most abundant biopolymer on earth. In the TômTex Series M, we exclusively derive our chitosan from mushrooms, ensuring a 100% plant-based source.
In the last decade, mushrooms have risen as a promising material for regenerative design. A key aspect of mushroom’s chemical make up is chitosan. TômTex understands that many customers are looking for a truly plant based option for leather and other materials. TômTex wanted to create a fabric that could be both plant based and environmentally friendly as our early development stages showed us that most vegan leathers are made with petrochemicals.
TômTex works with mushroom farmers that use sustainable practices to grow their mushrooms like using low value materials and waste streams for their substrates. Some of these streams bring in materials that might usually be discarded like hay, sawdust, chippings and more to grow the mushrooms that are then sent to chitosan producers.
TômTex is dedicated to not only our own materials but the entire textile space. We are committed to connecting mushroom farmers with chitosan producers to close the loop and incentivize better, more ecological practices. We want all biological materials to be used to their fullest potential to create a world that is circular and regenerative.
In 2023, TômTex worked with Dauphinette and Maitrepierre to bring a look to the London Fashion Week runway and Paris fashion Week runway that was made of TômTex Series M. These looks featured TômTex Co.’s proprietary Series M fabric to display a material that is otherworldly yet durable, a clear version of TômTex’s Series M material.
